Rep. Omar Secures Fifth Straight DFL Endorsement with Unanimous Support

May 9, 2026

MINNEAPOLIS – Congresswoman Ilhan Omar released the following statement after securing the DFL endorsement at the Fifth District convention today. The strength of her support forced her opponent to withdraw from the contest before ballots were distributed. She proceeded to win with unanimous support from delegates across the district.

“I am incredibly honored to earn the DFL endorsement. People say a lot of things about Minnesota, but one thing that they should be saying is how fierce and strong we are. I came to Minnesota as a young refugee and saw something special: a community that shows up, takes care of one another, and never turns its back on those in need. Right now, powerful forces are trying to divide us, silence us, and strip away our rights. They want fear to win. But here in the Fifth District, we don’t back down.

“I’ve never been afraid to take on Donald Trump, extremism, and the rise of fascism—and I never will be. Not when immigrants are targeted. Not when children are hungry. Not when people are losing access to healthcare. Not when our democracy is at stake.

“And I’ve delivered: bringing home over $65 million for our communities, helping thousands of constituents through casework, and hosting nearly 125 town halls and roundtables—because your voice matters.

“It is an honor to represent you in Congress and be your DFL endorsed candidate. It is an honor to be your neighbor. It is an honor to be in this movement with you all. This district needs a fighter who won’t back down. I am that fighter. And I won’t back down—because our community, our values, and our future are worth fighting for. Thank you to the people of Minnesota’s Fifth District, to the delegates at today’s convention, to my family, and to my staff for having my back.”
