Rep. Omar Campaign Spokesperson Statement on Arrest During Civil Disobedience Action at Supreme Court

July 19, 2022

MINNEAPOLIS—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was arrested today in a protest at the Supreme Court of the United States, demonstrating against the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and eliminating the right to privacy and bodily autonomy of tens of millions of Americans.

“While Rep. Omar is putting her body on the line to protect reproductive rights across the country, her primary opponent is paying tens of thousands of dollars to one of the most virulent anti-choice activists in Minnesota,” said campaign spokesman Jeremy Slevin. “The contrast couldn’t be starker.”

Newly released FEC filings revealed that her primary opponent is paying  in excess of $16,000 to radical anti-abortion former-Minneapolis City Council candidate Victor Martinez. Martinez, who has said he is “unapologetically pro-life from the womb to the tomb,” was noted to have voted in the 2020 Republican primary election, where Donald Trump was the only candidate on the ballot.

Rep. Omar has been a leader on abortion rights since coming to Congress, and is a House cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify Roe v Wade into law. She supports eliminating the Hyde Amendment which limits access to abortion services for millions of women enrolled in Medicaid and other federal programs, and repealing the global gag rule, a policy that restricts nonprofits across the globe that receive U.S. foreign assistance from providing women assistance with or referrals to abortion services.

Earlier this week, Rep. Omar spoke to thousands of Minnesotans at a rally for abortion rights at the State Capitol. You can watch a portion of her speech here.

Rep. Omar is endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
