DFL Muslim Caucus, National Women’s Political Caucus Endorse Representative Ilhan Omar

April 22, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) today was endorsed by the DFL Muslim Caucus and the National Women’s Political Caucus, adding to the more than three dozen organizations and local elected officials who support her reelection.

“I am honored to have the continued support of so many in our community,” Rep. Omar said. “I believe you can’t be what you can’t see. The DFL Muslim Caucus is vital to making sure that we increase American Muslim participation in our politics and have elected leaders who represent their values. I am also honored to have the backing of the National Women’s Political Caucus, who do vital work in electing pro-choice women at all levels of government. Whether it is by fighting against the Trump Administration’s Muslim ban or the global gag rule, I will continue to stand for the values and legislation my constituents sent me to Washington to fight for.”

“As a visionary leader, Congresswoman Omar supports a plan for universal healthcare to ensure that all Americans have a right to good health and well-being,” said Asad Zaman, Chair of the DFL Muslim Caucus. “Her insistence that healthcare should be affordable, easily accessible, and a human right for all shows her alignment with her constituents and the majority of the US population. She has introduced bills as diverse as college for all and canceling student debt (including canceling school lunch debt), to ending subsidies to the fossil fuel industries. These are bills that directly impact her constituents, with whom she maintains close connections. She has also passed multiple pieces of legislation through the House of Representatives, including the PAUL Act, the MEALS Act, and the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act. The DFL Muslim caucus questions whether any of Rep. Omar’s challengers would be as courageous as Rep. Omar in introducing as many truly progressive bills.”

The DFL Muslim Caucus is a constituency caucus of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota, whose purpose is to increase American-Muslim participation in party politics. The Caucus is open to, and includes members of all faiths, genders, gender identities, and ethnicities. Members of the caucus interview candidates and officeholders for the purpose of issuing an endorsement to candidates who we feel best reflect the views and positions of the caucus.

“We are happy to endorse Rep. Omar’s reelection to Congress,: said Donna Lent, President of the National Women’s Political Caucus. “We appreciate all Rep. Omar does to support women’s rights and know that she will continue to fight for all of us. We wish her much success in her campaign.”

The National Women’s Political Caucus is a multi-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women’s participation in the political process. NWPC recruits, trains and supports pro-choice women candidates for elected and appointed offices at all levels of government. In addition to financial donations, the Caucus offers campaign training for candidates and campaign managers, as well as technical assistance and advice. State and local chapters provide support to candidates running at state and local levels by helping raise money and providing crucial hands-on volunteer assistance.
